Mathematics - Upper Years Curriculum

The upper school curriculum is based on spiral levels of understanding from simple explorations to advanced understanding of concepts and skills. Student focus is on developing an understanding of pre-algebra concepts in sixth grade, while cementing math skills previously learned in the primary and intermediate years. For seventh and eighth grade students, major topics include: scientific notation; customary measurement; metric measurement; integers (positive and negative numbers); applications of fractions, decimals, and percents; inequalities; proportional thinking; problem solving strategies; uses of variables; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in algebra; and linear sentences. Further, eighth grade students pursue topics in algebra including properties of slopes and lines; applications of exponents and powers; graphing; quadratic equations and square roots; polynomials; linear systems; factoring; functions; and tools of geometry.
